My Dad was a singer and guitarist in the 60's and early 70's around the Perth scene - he got a bit famous supporting Kamahl and a group from the eastern states called 'Bill and Boyd' that your grand parents probably remember for singing 'Put Another Log on the Fire' - he was my hero!
He played a 'Gretsch Anniversay' guitar which would be a 1963 vintage guitar now worth probably in the tens of thousands of dollars but it was very precious back when I was a kid and it had a home under a bed in my house. Even though I was rough and couldn't play my dad let me play the thing as much as I liked and I really was in awe of the thing and the sounds that it made even when it wasn't plugged in. I'm sure if he had growled at me for touching the guitar I wouldn't have the got the chances I did as a younger person - I didn't start playing properly until I was 14 though and I didn't really take it too seriously until I was 19
When I was 19 I won a competition that made me think I could go pro - so I did - my Dad then sold his vintage Gretsch guitar and his vintage 1965 Fender Vibrolux Amp (worth tens of thousands of dollars also) so that I could get myself the loudest and best heavy metal rig to play in Perth's early 90's hard rock industry
I owe my parents everything for the sacrifices they made (and they sacrificed everything) so that I had the opportunities to be a pro and go to WAAPA, meet the people I have and even start Music Rocks
Some of you will have similar stories or ones that show you are really doing it all off your own back - but lets get them rolling because they're all unique and interesting - good work Ils
